Compare of two different artificial saliva material effect of Candida albicans adhesion on the polymethylmethacrylate denture base material

Abstract (EN)

In symptomatic treatment of xerostomia which is asubjectif complain in elder patients using dentures, artificial saliva isan easy and trusty treatment choice. In this research two differentartificial saliva materials which are Saliva Orthana and Biotene-Oralbalance were compared in terms of the effect of Candida albicansadhesion on the polymethylmethacrylate denture base material.In the present study, 45 (fourty five) heat-cured acrylicresin (Acron Duo) disc shaped specimens with 10 mm diameter and 2mm thickness were prepared. Specimens which were prepared withno. 400 sand paper, were put into a sterile vessel including distilledwater for 1 week in 370C inorder to release the residuel monomers.Ten of the specimens were randomly choosen for the measurementsof surface roughness by using the profilometer and the mean surfaceroughness was defined. Then acrylic specimens were autoclavesterilized for 18 minutes at 1,2 bar, 1210C and randomly allocated into3 groups. Each group included 15 specimens. Specimens in group 1,group 2 and group 3 were stored in Saliva Orthana, Biotene-Oralbalance and distilled water respectively. Group 3 was the controlgroup. The specimens were stored in these saliva substitutes anddistilled water at 370C for 2 hours. Then they were exposed to yeastsuspensions including Candida albicans at 370C for 3 hours inhorizontal mixer. Yeast cells adhered to the specimens which werestained with gram were counted and the results were evaluated interms of scoring scale (Score 1, Score 2, Score 3, Score 4). Theresults were statisticaly analyzed by using Kruskall-Wallis and Mann?Whitney U test.Group 1 showed higher Candida albicans adhesionscores than Group 2 and Group 3. Group 2 showed higher C. albicansadhesion score than Group 3. Consequently adhesion of Candidaalbicans to PMMA denture base materials is an inevitable issue.However this adhesion shows differences in accordance with theenvironment which the materials were exposed.Key words: adhesion, Candida albicans, artificialsaliva, polymethylmethacrylate
