The Macedonian generals in Polyainos' Strategemata

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the fourth chapter of Polyainos' Strategemata, which Macedonian generals are included, all of the anecdotes in the chapter has been translated and examined one by one. The study's goal is, to prove author's mistakes, missings, arbitrary addings and changings in the anecdotes by generally comparing with the ancient sources. In this context, in the first chapter, the genre of Polyainos's work, Strategemata¸ was described with the main lines and the other examples of the genre. In the second chapter, particularly the life of author and strategemata and also the works of author were informed. The aim of author's work and the trend of the century how affected Polyainos and the other authors were also informed. In the third chapter, with the military and political incidents of 2nd century, the philosophical and literary trends were described. In the fourth chapter, firstly, the history of Macedonia was explained in general and then, the general structure and the units of Macedonian army were described. Lastly, before the examination of the anecdotes, the short biographies of generals of the chapter, some of those are long, were written and next, together with the translation of the anecdotes, the examination of the anecdotes has been started. In the conclusion, the study has been finished with a general evaluation about the fourth chapter and Polyainos according to the fourth chapter of Strategemata. In addition, with the categorization of the strategies, correct, definitely false and suspicious informations, carelessnesses in the anecdotes, anecdotes containing information that can only be gotten by the fourth chapter of the work were given in the form of a table in the appendix.
