Production of reinforced concrete lintel using pumice and obsidian aggregate

Abstract (EN)

In this study, reinforced lightweight concrete lintels were produced by using pumice extracted from the quarries in the Demirdöven district of the Erzurum-Pasinler region and obsidian aggregates accumulated as waste at the factory site of Kaleblok Bims Company, which manufactures lightweight construction elements in the region. Lightweight aggregate concrete containing 100% pumice and 10% obsidian + 90% pumice was produced by using CEM II-42.5 R type cement as a binder. Lightweight reinforced concrete lintels with an average unit volume weight of 1500 kgf/m3 were produced using the specified concrete mixtures. 1.3 m, 1.8 m, and 2.4 m span lintels were subjected to mechanical tests in accordance with the related standard, and their evenly distributed load carrying capacities were obtained experimentally and theoretically. As a result of the experimental study, it was concluded that the lintels have a uniformly distributed load carrying capacity ranging from 900 to 3600 kgf/m and that this value is above the market demand. Although the use of low amounts of obsidian as fine aggregate reduces the amount of cement used, it has been observed that the load bearing capacity of the lintels and the late period unit volume weight values of the lintels do not provide different results than the lintels manufactured with 100% pumice.
