The impact of rock bands within popular culture on the paintings of 9th and 10th grade students of the Ankara Anatolian High School of Fine Arts

In the research, it was attempted to determine whether rock bands within popular culture has an impact on the paintings of 9th and 10th grade students of the Ankara Anatolian High School of Fine Arts; and the direction and degree of this impact.The universe of the research is composed of 9th and 10th grade students attending to Anatolian High School of Fine Arts in all Turkey. The sample of the research is composed of 9th and 10th grade students of the Ankara Anatolian High School of Fine Arts.The basic reason why 9th and 10th grade levels were selected from among grade levels of secondary education is that various effects of rock music, as one of the dominant music styles of popular culture, is gradually being observed in younger students. As the first levels of secondary education, the 9th and 10th grade were determined with the assumption that this impact would be seen more openly and clearly in students who have newly transferred from primary education to secondary education.The basic idea behind this trailblazing research in its own field was to contribute to educational sciences and shed light on future researches, with the thought that the mentioned effects that have social, psychological and cultural dimensions would inevitably reflect in the paintings of the students, as they stand out in their clothing, behavior and speech.The basic data of the research are composed of the student paintings obtained during 9th and 10th grade painting classes at the Ankara Anatolian High School of Fine Arts.The differences between paintings the students made before and after they listened to rock music were compared. The basis of the comparison is the reflection of the rock culture and its visual materials, on the students? work as picture elements. It was attempted to determine whether the elements the students used in their paintings before listening to rock music, appeared after listening to rock music and whether any increase or decrease in their use was observed.The viewpoint of the students about rock music and rock culture, the level of the interest they have and the influence they get was evaluated by way of the analysis of the answers they gave to the questionnaire.Although limited due to the limited number of students, the data obtained (student paintings) was used to put forth the connections of elements in student paintings and their prominent characteristics with rock music by way of matching.During the research, it was observed that rock music and rock culture has various effects of social, psychological and cultural dimensions on the emotional and intellectual world of secondary education youth living in big cities, and that these effects distinctively reflected in their paintings as a natural outcome.
