The image of Greek- "Rum" in Turkish popular historicism (1940-1960)

Abstract (EN)

This study has been investigated from the past to the present, which are the factors that have been instrumental in creating a view of each other in Turkey and Greece. The historical process studied was limited between 1940 and 1960. During this time, the popular history writing in Turkey was illuminated by the Greek-"Rum" image and what events it was shaped by the examination of news, articles and cartoons about Greece, Greeks-"Rum" and Cyprus, which were published in some of the designated newspapers and magazines. In the study, cartoons in newspapers, articles in popular history magazines and corner posts in newspapers were found that Greek-"Rum" identity was marginalized by current political tensions. The newspapers also focused on how the cartoons drawn, referring to the Cyprus Issue and Greece's Enosis thesis, depict the Greek-"Rum" image. Cartoons were found to be more effective and sarcastic in reflecting the image of identity than sentences. The scope of the literary works was determined by the characteristics such as the works that were first published between 1940 and 1960 and that contained Greek-"Rum" image. Afterwards, the works were read with a deconstructive method. In the section of literary works, "Is there a common approach among the representatives of the same ideological view regarding the Greek- "Rum"? If so, can a connection be established between the viewpoint of the "other" and ideologies? Answers were sought for such questions. The inference reached from the findings is that a negative prejudice prevails in the view of Greek- "Rum". Nation states, the "other" has been observed that always the danger and support through historiography to be detected with the threat policy Popular historiography tools out prepared retains its vitality in the collective memory of the negative Greek- "Rum" image in this thesis.
