The relationship between the concept of post-truth and contemporary art

Post-truth is one of the most discussed concepts of our era. Even when there is no consensus on its existence, texts on the topic increase daily. Particularly, the sudden increase in the use of the word in 2016 proves that the term found its place within society. Although this increase results from political instability around the globe, the concept of post-truth is too broad of a concept to be evaluated within this simple context. There are many concepts in which the post-truth interacts sociologically, culturally, philosophically and scientifically. In all these areas, it is possible to observe the concept of truth, which is one of the components of the post-truth, is devalued or ignored. This master's thesis is written to examine this problematic relationship with the truth. The trivialization of the truth creates specific changes within the field of art. These changes are discussed through the relationship between the concept of truth and art in a philosophical context. This work explains how the representations of truth, which started with allegorical representations, are transformed in the field of contemporary art. In line with this process, works of art produced in the post-truth era are examined, and the relationship that artists established with truth while creating their works was explained through post-truth and related concepts.
