Bone mineral density and associated factors in postmenopausal women

This retrospective study used 349 postmenopausal female participants' bone mineral density data from a healthcare polyclinic in Kadıköy, Istanbul. These female patients have participated in bone mineral density measurements since 2021. After a written and verbal consent, a face-to-face questionnaire took place. As a result of the questionnaire, to diagnose the bone mineral density disease (dependent variable), the patients were to be examined in Osteoporosis, Osteopenia and normal category with factors (independent variable). The presented descriptive statistics and findings of all relevant variables and interpreted using the Chi-Square test to analyse the relationship between all factors thought to be related and the diagnosis of the disease. The BMD measurement result values of 18.6% of the participants were Normal, 59.3% were Osteopenia, and 22.1% were Osteoporosis. 4.4% of the participants carried out measurements due to the doctor's request, and 45.6% had their measurements taken at their request. The results of the data on bone mineral density measurements taken from postmenopausal women were statistically relevant and categorised into groups; use of drugs for Osteoporosis (p=0.00), use of thyroid drugs (p=0.041), age groups of participants (p=0.017), contraceptive drug use (p=0.00), and body mass index (p=0.001). There was no significant relationship between those using prescribed medicine for bone fracture history, breast cancer, cortisone, stomach problems, vitamin D, antidepressant, chronic disease, consumption of dairy products, coffee consumption, smoking status, physical activity status, family history of hip fracture, history of hip fracture in the last ten years, age at menopause, menopause drug, household income, education level, number of children and marital status. This study aimed to gather relevant information to find and share the risk factors that may cause Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women to contribute to health professionals and health institutions.
