Abstract (EN)

Novels and cinema are intertwined branches that nourish each other. The main focus of this study is the examination of examples of postmodern novels adapted for film. Three postmodern novels were examined for this purpose. This thesis consists of four parts: introduction, first chapter, second chapter, and conclusion. The introduction provides information about cinema and the novel. The world's first examples of cinema are examined according to various categories, and the inventors who contributed to the development of cinema are analyzed. The introduction of cinema to the Ottoman Empire and its development in Türkiye are studied. The development of the novel globally is analized. The differences that arise in the texts when they are adapted from novels to film are emphasized. The first chapter outlines the concept of postmodernism and provides information on its reflection in literature. Some information on postmodern cinema is provided. The second chapter analyzes the novels first. Then, the differences between the texts that emerged during the adaptation of these novels for film are compared. This chapter critiques the novels and films, particularly considering the data from postmodernism. In this context, the historical development of cinema and the relationship between postmodern cinema and literary cinema constitute the primary focus of this thesis. After completing all the research, the practical part began. First, Orhan Pamuk's novel The Black Book and the film "Secret Face," directed by Ömer Kavur and adapted from a section of the novel, were examined. Secondly, the novel Gölgesizler written by Hasan Ali Toptaş and the film "Gölgesizler" directed by Ümit Ünal and released in 2009, which was adapted from this novel, were examined. Finally, Metin Kaçan's Ağır Roman and the film "Ağır Roman" directed by Mustafa Altıoklar, adapted from the novel, released in 1997, were examined. The novels and films were first examined in terms of their characters, setting, and time. Furthermore, the novels' narrative techniques, the comparative plots between the novels and the films, and the filmmaking techniques were examined. The differences between the novels and the films were then compared through the lens of postmodernism. This study aims to reveal the differences between these three novels and their converting into cinema forms and to convey the influence of postmodernism in these works to readers.
