The issue of reality in postmodern Turkish novels

Reality is a core concept for postmodernism. Because in postmodernism, reality shifts ground, and it is accepted that fiction creates reality. In accordance with this change, it is concluded that objective reality is also a kind of narrative. In line with the acceptance that reality is a narrative in postmodernism, the distinction between external reality and narrative is removed. In postmodern novels, reality and fiction are equalized on the same level. Reality is approached with a pluralistic, suspicious and playful attitude. This attitude towards reality underlies such techniques as metafiction and intertextuality used in postmodernism. Therefore, in order to analyze the aforementioned techniques it is necessary to examine how the appearances of reality are used in postmodern novels. In this study, the focus is on the appearances of reality shown in postmodern Turkish novels. The appearances of reality that emerge in five novels that had been chosen for this purpose, were examined in terms of postmodern narrative features and such techniques as metafiction and intertextuality.
