The function Grimms' Fairy Tales in postmodernist narratives (2000-2015)

Compared to the previous centuries, there have been important leaps in the 20th century in terms of science, inventions, speed and consumption. And postmodernism has also been one of the biggest issues in the 20th century. Although it is a subject of current debate whether there is a rise or a collapse in the art, postmodernism is a phenomenon that involves almost all social values and reshapes these in its own way. The tradition that has created the course of the art until this era, is one of the regenerated values through postmodernism. Folk tales are traditional works and originate from the oldest ages beyond writing. These genres reflect all the lines of the sociocultural life of a society. As one of the subtypes of these narratives, fairy tales contains all kinds of beliefs, feelings and rituals and address a wide audience including children. These "time resistent" works of oral tradition emerged in the 20th century with different variants through postmodernism. Grimms' Fairy Tales, which was written in the 19th century, can be considered as one of the most important works of German culture and has influences on cultural life of Turkey and many other countries. These narratives have been reflected on the art as well as on the sociocultural environment and transformed in an eclectic structure in postmodern literature due to the progress in the modern period. As postmodernism has an attribute that compounds the past, the future, the present and any other possible times, it covers all the oral and written narratives transferred from the past to the present. Especially, the tradition has become a current issue through postmodernism. However, the reflection of the tradition in postmodernism has an eclectic and ironic form due to pluralism. All the narratives, places, time, space, institutions and social values have been interlaced and it is difficult to distinguish these components. The present study aimed to investigate the roles of Grimms' Fairy Tales as an oral tradition in postmodern narratives. Thus, the interaction between novel and fairy tales will be revealed in the postmodern narratives, the meeting points of the intertwined literary genres.
