Automated interpretation methods in potential field and application to the archeological sites

This study contains the application of the geophysical interpretation techniques, named commonly as Automated or Semi-automated Interpretation Methods (Normalized Full Gradients (NFG), Euler Deconvolution Method (EDM)) and added to these methods searching Location of Maximal Points of the Horizontal Gradients (Boundary Analysis Method (BAM)) in archeological sites. The fist two methods require no prior knowledge of the source magnetic direction. As a result, they may be successfully applied in areas where the geology is poorly known. In NFG Method, Fourier coefficients of the magnetic data have been computed by Filon' s method, and NFG values are determined by using their derivatives. The effects of simple models have been performed on NFG sections obtained from analytical continuation downward of NFG values of the magnetic data. It is important to mention that field characteristic of NFG which show the relationship with the positions of singularities, can be obtained with this method based on downward analytical continuation method, but not the exact computation of the downward continuation value. Euler' s homogeneity equation has been used to develop a new technique to interpret the magnetic anomalies over simple geometric sources. The EDM based on Euler's homogeneity relationship, is widely used in rapid auto-interpretation of the magnetic data. The quality of the depth estimation mostly depends to the parameters known as the anomaly falloff rate related to the nature of the magnetic sources and structural index.Added to these methods, it is also tried to use scatterings location of the maximum points of the horizontal gradients amplitudes over map surface to obtain the boundaries of the structure. The methods mentioned above have been tested first of all on the theoretical models, and then they are applied to the magnetic data obtained from Hittite archeological cities such as Çorum-Ortaköy Şapinuva. The results obtained after the archeological excavation support the geophysical interpretation.
