Abstract (EN)

OBJECTİVE: It is estimated that more than one third of adults in developed countries have prediabetes. As prediabetes is associated with cardiac risk, morbidity and mortality, the importance of early diagnosis is increasing. The mechanism of prediabetes-related complications has not yet been clarified. Oxidative stress is also one of the implicated mechanisms. The aim of our study is to evaluate the oxidant and antioxidant levels in prediabetic individuals and thus to evaluate the oxidative stress caused by mild hyperglycemia. MATERIAL-METHODS: A total of 160 people, 80 patients from the prediabetes group and 80 people from the healthy control group, were included in our study. Serum samples were taken from both groups after 8 hours of fasting. In the samples taken from the patients, Total Oxidant Level (TOS), Total Antioxidant Level (TAS) were measured together with C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and other biochemical markers, and Oxidative Stress Index (OSI) was calculated and the data were compared with healthy individuals. RESULTS: While there was no statistically significant increase in the oxidative stress indicator TOS and OSI in the prediabetes group compared to the healthy control group (p value: 0.44 and 0.88, respectively), on the contrary, an increase in the antioxidant indicator TAS was shown (p = 0.001). In addition, CRP, an inflammatory marker, was found to be statistically significantly higher in the prediabetic group compared to healthy individuals (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: In addition to the increase in oxidative stress in prediabetic individuals, total antioxidant status also increases. This situation can be evaluated as the body's compensatory mechanism. For this reason, the development of complications in the later stages will be prevented in individuals who are caught and treated in the prediabetic period. Keywords: Prediabetes, oxidative stress, TAS, TOS, OSI
