The importance of Selenoprotein W (SEPW1) polymorphism in patients with preeclampsia

Abstract (EN)

Preeclampsia is a hypertension seen in pregnancy. Preeclampsia is characterized by proteinuria and edema. It is observed in the development of the mother and fetus of quite risky complications. Trace elements have an important role in human health. Selenium, which is one of these elements, is usually found in the structure of selenoproteins, which are usually oxydoreductase activity. Recent studies have shown that selenoprotein W (SelW) plays an antioxidant role in embryo. The presence of a relationship between SelW expression in the muscle and heart tissue and blood selenium levels of the fetus was demonstrated.In our study, we aimed to determine whether the common variation of selenoprotein W1 (SEPW1) (rs3786777) has changed the risk of possible disease in the etiopathogenesis of preeclampsia (PE). 82 preeclamptic and 85 healthy pregnant women were included in the study. Allele-Specific Polymerase Chain Reaction (ASPCR) analysis to determine the polymorphism of the SelW1 gene (rs3786777). The fetal weight, serum total protein and albumin levels of the healthy pregnant women were significantly decreased in the preeclamptic group (P <0.001, for each). On the other hand, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, body mass index and triglyceride levels were significantly increased in preeclamptic pregnant group (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, P< 0.001 and P < 0.01, respectively). The frequency of genotype distributions of rs3786777 gene was found to be 23% in CC genotype, 67% in CA genotype and 10% in AA genotype in preclamptic pregnants. In healthy pregnant women, CC genotype was found to be 27%, CA genotype was 57% and AA genotype was 16%. Genotype and allele distribution were not statistically significant (P> 0.05). According to these data, we found that the distribution of SEPW1 genotypes and alleles was not significantly different between preeclamptic and non-preeclamptic groups. SEPW1 polymorphism did not change the risk of PE in our population. The molecular mechanism of rs3786777 gene polymorphism in the etiopathogenesis of preeclampsia needs to be elucidated by studies involving further and larger populations.
