RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PREOPERATIVE SERUM THYROGLOBULIN LEVELS WITH PAPILLARY THYROID CANCER Mehmet Ali MELİK M.D. Residency Thesis, General Surgery Department Supervisor: İlyas BAŞKONUŞ M.D. Assoc. Prof. Assist Supervisor: Latif YILMAZ M.D. Asst. Prof. March 2018, 66 Pages BACKGROUND:The papillary thyroid cancers (PTC) are the most common cancer of endocrine cancers. The primary therapy is the surgery and the prognosis is very good. In spite of there are many methods for the early diagnosis; the simpler and non-invasive methods are being sought. The aim of this study is to find out whether the caloric value of thyroglobulin (Tg) is related to the papillary thyroid cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospectively;we measured the preoperative thyroglobulin value of 203 (159 female and 44 male) patients who underwent a total thyroidectomy with various indications in General Surgery Department of Gaziantep University. Postoperatively; 61patients with benign lesions, and 142 papillary thyroid cancers (PTC) patients had pathologic results compared with thyroglobulin(Tg)values. ROC analysis and Mann Whitney U test. RESULTS: In the patients with PTC;the mean preoperative thyroglobulin value was 105.05 ng / ml,and 76.80 ng / ml in the benign patients. According to ROC analysis ;The cut-off point was determined to be 102 ng / ml. According to the preoperative Tg in Mann Whitney U test There was a statistically significant difference between the benign group and PTC one (p <0,05). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION:Patients with a cut-off point of a preoperative Tg values bove 102 ng / mL may more likely to have PTC. It is thought that Tg can be considered as a criterion that can be added to the diagnostic methods according to this result which should be supported with new studies. Key words: Thyroid, Thyroglobulin, Diagnosis, Differentied
