Abstract (EN)

This study was carried out as a randomized controlled experiment in order to assess the effect of smelling maternal breast milk during venous blood sampling in terms of pain and stress levels weeks of gestatios. The data of research were collected from 60 newborn infants in total consists of 30 experimental and 30 control group hospitalized in The Intensive Care Unit of SANKO University Hospital in the dates between 07 December 2022 and 25 September 2023.The data, datum collection form, were collected with Newborn Infant Pain Scale (NIPS) and Premature İnfant's Comfort Scale (PICS) forms. While infants in the experimental group where the blood request planned by physician, were made to smell breast milk before 30 minutes, the casual ( routine) venipuncture process was applied to the infants in the control group by the nurses, and NIPS and PICS evaluation was implemented 5 minutes before, in the course of process, 5 minutes after the venipuncture process of experimental and control group by the researcher. As the effect of the practice of smelling maternal breast milk on pain and comfort level is examined; When the measurements of the groups were compared in terms of NIPS scoring (p<0.05). It was observed that there was a logical statistical difference between the groups in terms of NIPS scoring in the measurements made during the procedure and 5 minutes after the procedure (p<0.05). When the correlation between total NIPS and PICS scores was examined, it was determined that there was a low negative correlation between NIPS and PICS scores before the procedure (r=-0,11, p=0.01). Scrutinized the NIPS and PICS scores measured during the procedure, a strong correlation was found (r=0.89, p=0.01). Scrutinized the NIPS and PBCS scores measured 5 minutes after the procedure, a strong correlation was found (r=0.86, p=0.01). On the grounds of the research, it was determined that smelling breast milk, which is one of the non- pharmacological methods that can be used in invasive or non-invasive painful procedures on newborn infants, positively affects the pain and comfort level of babies. It is recommended that nurses working in Neonatal Intensive Care Units add one of the non- pharmacological methods to their routine nursing care in invasive or non-invasive painful procedures for babies, and nurses should be trained and supported in this practice .
