Primary school students' perceptions about STEM lessons

The fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) have played a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the modern world. With their collective knowledge and innovative applications, STEM disciplines have revolutionized every aspect of human existence, ranging from healthcare and transportation to communication and beyond. This abstract explores the transformative power of STEM by examining its impact on society, the economy, and the quest for scientific discovery. This research was conducted to determine students' perceptions about STEM courses and activities in their academic life. Qualitative data collection methods were used in the research group, which consisted of students from different backgrounds, education levels, and nationalities. The findings showed that most students exhibit positive attitudes towards STEM education, value the practicality of STEM activities, and appreciate the hands-on and collaborative nature of STEM lessons, as well as the real-world applications of STEM concepts. However, some students stated that they had difficulties in understanding STEM concepts and required additional support, particularly in subjects such as mathematics. Students indicated that they needed extra assistance, including individual and hands-on demonstrations, to better understand these topics and enhance their participation. Based on all these findings, it is recommended that educators focus on creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for STEM education. To achieve this, it is necessary to provide adequate resources, considering the individual needs of students, and offer professional development opportunities for teachers. Additionally, incorporating interdisciplinary approaches and real-world applications into STEM courses can enhance student motivation and engagement. Overall, this study provides valuable information about students' perspectives on STEM courses and activities in their academic life. By understanding students' individual needs and preferences, educators can increase the effectiveness of STEM education and inspire a new generation of innovative thinkers and problem solvers.
