Evaluation of receptive language, expressive language, and articulation in children with primary nocturnal enuresis

This study aims to evaluate the receptive language, expressive language, general development, and articulation skills of children with primary enuresis nocturna. A total of 40 children (Female:20, Male:20, Age: 5and 6 years and 6 months), who were admitted to pediatric and urology clinics, and diagnosed with primary enuresis nocturna, were included in the study. Children's receptive and expressive language were evaluated using the Test of Early Turkish Language Development (TELD), articulation evaluations were made using the Ankara Articulation Test (AAT), and developmental evaluations were made using the Denver II Developmental Screening Test (Denver II). The relationship between TELD and AAT subtest scores with variables of age, gender, number of siblings, education status of parents, the output of first words, and the month of gaining walking ability were examined. Of the 40 children diagnosed with enuresis nocturna, 27 (67.5%) delayed the TEDİL recipient language equivalent age, 29 (72.5%) delayed the TEDİL expressive language equivalent age according to chronological age. Articulation skills of 13 (32.5%) of 40 enuretic children included in our study were found to be delayed according to chronological age. It was determined that TELD scores have the difference between age groups(p<0,001). The verbal performance of the 6-years-old group was higher than that of the 5-year-old children. Denver II test results were found to be normal in 50%, suspect in 25%, and abnormal in 25% of the children participating in our study. A significant correlation was obtained between the Denver II results and gender (p = 0.027). It was found that boys showed a higher rate of 'abnormal' development than girls. As a result, in children with enuresis nocturna; Retardation was found in language, speech, articulation, and general development. Routine language, articulation, and developmental assessments can identify the need for early intervention for possible disorders in children with enuresis nocturna.
