Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to assess the efficiency and adverse effects of desmopressin treatment on patients with primary enuresis nocturna. Patients applied to Gazi University, Medical School Department of Pediatric Nephrology between November 2011 and February 2012 were included in the study. Study group was composed of 35 patients between 5 and 15 in age. The patients were subjected to physical examination from which normal results were obtained. All patients were, before the study, asked to record their micturition frequencies. There were no diurnal symptoms among the patients. No symptom relating to urological or neurological diseases was detected. Patients who have urinary incontinence problems, those younger than 5 years old and older than 18 years old and patients with an underlying disease (such as urinary dysfunction, urinary infection, urethral obstruction, ectopic ureter, obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes mellitus or insipitus, hyperthyroidism) were not included in the study. After explaining the treatment options the patients included in the study, 120 mcg desmopressin melt was applied to children whose parents accepted the desmopressin treatment. They were recommended to take single dose 30 minutes before going to sleep. Patients were instructed not to drink anything within 2 hours before going to sleep. The patients were those who were firstly diagnosed of primary enuresis nocturna and who have never received medication before. Blood sodium, potassium, calcium and blood osmolarity and also urine sodium, potassium, calcium, urine osmolarity and spot urine sodium/creatinine, calcium/creatinine, potassium/creatinine values of all the patients evalueted in the morning urine before their treatments were started. All measurements were repeated on the third and seventh day of their treatment program. The patients benefited from desmopressin treatment and no side effects was rccorded on treatment period. Desmopressin is found to be a safe, effective and highly tolerable medicine for primary monosymptomatic enuresis nocturna
