3SUMMARYBirth Method Choices of Primipar Women and the Factors Which Have anEffect on These ChoicesThis study has been carried out in order to determine the choices of women who havegiven their first birth with regard to method of birth and to look into the factorsaffecting these choices of birth method.This study has been applied to all the patients who were willing to participateand who gave their first births in the maternity wards of Afyonkarahisar KocatepeUniversity Ahmet Necdet Sezer Hospital of Practice and Research, AfyonkarahisarKocatepe Public Hospital, Zübeyde Hanım Hospital for Birth and Children Care andFuar Hospital without choosing particular specimens. 314 patients who were willingto participate were included in the study. 612 women have given birth to their firstchild within these three months.A survey comprising of 43 questions was used as a data gathering device.There were questions in the survey seeking to find answers as to the demographic,socio-cultural and pregnancy features of women, birth indications, the choices ofmothers-to-be with regard to the method of birth and the person who are influentialin the choice of the method of birth.Descriptive criteria (percent, minimum, maximum etc.), correlation analysisand Fischer test were used in the data analysis process and p<0,05 was determined asthe level of significance.At the end of the study 74,0 % of the women opted for vaginal birth while22,6% of them chose caesarian method of birth. When we look into the reasons forcaesarian method, the percentage of the woman who have this kind of birth on theirown will is 6,8%.The fact that their previous birth methods were caesarian had a significanteffect on women?s choosing caesarian method.When we look into the reasons of choosing one of these methods, there wereno significant difference with regard to their level of education or pregnancy history,4but there was a significant difference between the birth method choice and theirlevels of income.In addition to these, doctors were seen to have an important role in thedecision of birth method.It is noted that the women participating in the study weren?t properlyinformed about birth methods.It is thought that it is necessary to prepare the women for birth and eliminatethe lack of information by offering a complete educational services and counselingopportunities during the antenatal care for the pregnant women and to be able to dothis health personnel have to be made more conscious about the matter.Key Words: Birth preference, elective caesarean, normal delivery, caesareandelivery, rate of caesarean.
