Abstract (EN)

Aim: This research was conducted with the purpose of determining the effect of biological nurturing technique used for starting breastfeeding in primipara on breastfeeding success and self-efficacy. Material and Method: The research was conducted as randomized controlled study with mothers who gave birth at Kahramanmaraş Nezip Fazıl City Hospital, Gynaecology and Paediatrics Additional Service Building C-Section Service between February 2020 – June 2021. The data was collected with Personal Information Form, Breastfeeding Diagnosis Assessment Scale LATCH and Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale – Short Form BSES-SF. Sample size was calculated as minimum 65 women for each group (65 experiment, 65 control). Biological nurturing technique was taught to mothers in experiment group and breastfeeding was ensured in accordance with the technique during their stay at the hospital. At 1st hour after first breastfeeding, LATCH and BSES-SF were applied to the mothers in experiment and control group and pre-test data was obtained. LATCH was applied at the end of 8th and 24th hour after labour. Post-test data was obtained by applying LATCH and BSES at the end of 48th hour after labour. In statistical analysis; count, percentage distribution, arithmetic average, chi-square test, standard deviation, t-test in dependent and independent groups and ANOVA analysis in repeated measurements were used. Results: It was determined that breastfeeding self-efficacy levels and breastfeeding success of the mothers in experiment and control group were similar before biological nurturing technique (p>0.05). However, it was determined that experiment group had statistically higher LATCH score average than control group in all of the measurements at 8th, 24th and 48th hours after labour (p<0.001). According to LATCH average scores, it was determined that eta-squared value was 0.77 (high impact level) for experiment group and 0.15 (high impact level) for control group. It was determined that BSES post-test total average score was 60.74±6.75 in experiment group and 45.23±10.59 in control group and this difference was statistically significant (t=9.955; p=0.000). Conclusion: It was determined that biological nurturing technique used for starting breastfeeding in primipara increases breastfeeding success and self-efficacy significantly.
