Volumetric evaluation of nucleus caudatus, putamen and globus pallidus in patients with prodromal parkinson's and parkinson's

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease. The stage in which early symptoms and signs related to neurodegeneration are seen in Parkinson's Disease, but the diagnosis is not yet finalized, is considered as Prodromal Parkinson's Disease (PPD). This latent phase ranges from 5 to 20 years and according to current diagnostic criteria, the disease is already advanced at the time of diagnosis of PD. PD is characterized by disruption of the basal ganglia, which are subcortical structures. Neuroimaging and neurophysiological methods provide invaluable information for understanding disease pathophysiology in Parkinson's patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the volumes of Nucleus Caudatus, Putamen and Globus Pallidus measured using magnetic resonance images in patients with Prodromal Parkinson's Disease (PPD) and Parkinson's Disease (PD), and to present comparatively how these structures are affected in patients with PPD and PD. For this purpose, baseline, 1st, 2nd and 4th years MR images of 73 patients who were diagnosed with PD and MR images of 93 patients who were diagnosed with PPD from Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) were evaluated. Nowadays, automatic, reliable and evaluating volume as quantitatively MRG softwares has important roles in the imaging and diagnosis of many neurological diseases. In this study, VolBrain, one of the web-based softwares, was used and the volumes Nucleus Caudatus, Putamen and Globus Pallidus was measured in cm3. SPSS V21 package program was used for the analysis of the data. No similar study was found in the literature. Therefore, it is being considered that this study will provide information about the diagnosis, progression and level of the disease by determining possible volume changes in brain structures with the data obtained from the study.
