Problems that professional managers face in family business enterprises: a survey on the family business enterprises in Eskişehir

Family business enterprises which have a big share on the Turkish economy as well as the world economy are the driving forces of these economies. Those which can comply with the increasing competition and have sustainability create employment and help to increase the national income. The rest, which cannot ensure their sustainability are closed or sold. The sustainability of the family business enterprises which comprise the 95% of the Turkish economy depends on various factors. The most important factors in ensuring the sustainability and well-functioning of the management functions in family business enterprises are the institutionalism and the transition to professional management. Nevertheless, the affection of the business culture from the family culture, the distrust to the professional managers, the hesitation in the delegation of the authority and nepotism has a negative impact on this process. These circumstances avoid the professional managers in performing their managerial functions properly and lead to problems with the managers from the family. This study is a quantitative research in order to determine the problems of the professional managers who are working in family business enterprises that are supposed to be institutionalized and international in Eskişehir.
