Abstract (EN)

The Evaluation Of Plasma Sialic Acid Levels Of The Patients Whose Trans Rectal Prostate Biopsies Were Performed With The Suspect Of Prostate Cancer Aim:The aim of this study is to evaluate the plasma sialic acid levels of the patients whose transrectal prostate biopsies were performed with the suspect of prostate cancer. Materialsandmethod: A number of 143 patients were included to the study who applied to Dicle University Medicine Faculty Urology Policlinics, with high prostate specific antigen(PSA) levels or normal/anormal rectal examination results between January 2012-February 2013. Before the biopsy application, total bloods were collected from the patients to determine the levels of PSA and sialic acid. Lectin base enzyme-linked ımmunosorbent assay (ELISA) method was used to determine the sialic acid levels. The patients were divided into 3 groups; adenocancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and other pathologies (prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), atypical small acinar proliferation (ASAP)). Results:The meanage of the patients was determined as 65,3 years and the mean PSA level was 18,4 ng/ml. By the rectal examination; suspicious results were found in 35 patients. The The mean sialic acid levels were 112,7 among pathologiacally adenocancer diagnosed patients, and 60,5 among BPH patients. There were statistically significant differences among these groups (p= 0,09). There were no statistically significantly differences between adenocancer, ASAP and PIN groups in thecase of sialicacid (p=0,6). There was no correlation detected between sialic acid, tPSA, body mass index (BMI), anormal rectal examination results, age and Gleason score. Conclusion:Plasma sialic acid levels is likely to be used to predict prostate carcinoma and premalign pathologies. But we need more studies with wide patient series to support this conclusion.
