Protons are generally used to bombard the target matter to produce neutrons. The neutron yield from the high-energy proton interaction with the target nuclei depends on the material type as well as its size for a given incident particle energy. For practical purpose it is the number of neutrons obtained per incident proton. Neutron yield increases significantly for high-Z targets depending on proton energies increase. In order to maximize the neutron production the target must be a heavy metal (tungsten, lead, uranium). The axial distribution of leakage neutrons from the target depends on the target moderator coupling. Simulation programs are used for the determination of the target. The purpose of the simulation is to analysis interacting the different thickness target with proton beams and the determination of neutron yield. The target used in the simulation was a cylinder with diameter 20 cm, length 60 cm. The diameter is fixed and vary the length (20, 30, 40, 50, 60 cm) and the proton energy (0.03, 0.3, 0.6, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 GeV). In order to avoid the interaction of protons, with the material in the surrounding of the target medium was chosen as vacuum. Beryllium, copper, lead and thorium were used as target materials. The purpose of this study is to determine neutron yield of which appears in the interactions different target materials (or target dimensions) at the different energies of protons by using FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation code. As a result of the studies; the neutron yield and neutron flux depending on the energy of protons, the target materials and size of the target material was observed. Reached values were found to be conformity with the values in the literature.
