Özet (EN)

The Patient Restraint Methods Used in Psychiatry and the Opinions of Doctors and Nurses about the SubjectThe psychiatry patients could be kept involuntarily in the hospital and be treated regardless of considering their will or wishes. This situation leads to the aggressive behaviors and self harm and damage around him/her in the patient. For this reason, it is essential that the physical and chemical restraint methods are applied for the safety. In the application, the ethical and legal problems have been experienced. There is the physical psychological effect on the person and applied to the implements. There is no certain standart in the application and there is no legal organization and the health profession workers have no sufficient information and experience on the application, and there is no affective training for the contunity. The situation above cause that the health profession workers exhibit the different attitude and behavior. As there is no still response for the question of who decides the restraint application and when and which method will be preferred, it has been seen that there where no sufficient studies on the applications in both our country and the word. This study was performed so that the thoughts of the nurses and the physicians working in the psychiatry were received in relation to the usage of the restraint methods. Data was obtained from the question form which was prepared by the researcher and Fisher?s and Pearson Q-square tests were use as the addiction. There were significantly differences between the thoughts of the nurses and the physicians in the choices about physical and chemical preferances between the usages of the restraint methods and the study with the variabilities (x2 11.589; p=0.01). Should be adjusted according to the patient?s age and weight (x2 4.458; p=0.035), the physical/chemical restraint methods must be definitely used in order not to increase in the patient?s violence behaviours (x2 14.05; p=0.000) and the communication problems experienced between the health professional workers, patient and their relatives increase the usage of the restraint (x2 12.233;p=0.000). In addition to this, the importance of the education in the usage of the restraint was emphasized. While each profession group had the similar responses on the legal and ethical matters in the usage of the restraint, it has been seen that they were abstained on the approval to treat patients. When we have taken into consideration of the results of our study, it has been understood that there is a difference between the clinical application and the cited views and thus that the nurses and the physicians have great roles and responsibilities on the application matter.Key words: restraint methods, physical/chemical restraint, psychiatry nurse, psychiatry physician.
