Determination of the level of stigmatization towards people with substance use disorders among psychologists and affecting factors

This study aimed to examine psychologists' stigmatization levels towards individuals with substance use disorders and the factors affecting these levels. A sample was not selected; the aim was to reach volunteers who participated in the study between December 1, 2024, and February 28, 2025, via electronic media (such as social media/WhatsApp groups). A total of 204 participants were reached. Data were collected using sociodemographic characteristics of the participants, questions assessing their experiences with substance use disorders, and the YEDAM Substance Addiction Stigmatization Scale. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 25.0 software using independent samples t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and linear regression analysis. Statistical significance was assessed at p<0.05 for all results. 79.4% of the participants were female, while 20.6% were male. The mean score on the YEDAM Substance Addiction Stigmatization Scale was 19.22±4.70, with minimum and maximum scores of 5 and 32, respectively. Forward linear regression analysis revealed that using substances other than cigarettes and alcohol (p = 0,011), hearing about YEDAM (p < 0,001), believing that substance-addicted individuals can be reintegrated into society (p = 0,008) and believing that psychological problems affect substance addiction decreased the level of stigmatization (p =0,004), while the variable of the possibility of suicide among substance-addicted individuals increased the level of stigmatization (p = 0,005). Determining the level of stigma towards individuals with substance use disorders among psychologists and examining the factors affecting this situation is crucial for the effective development of intervention programs and service models. Therefore, determining the levels of stigmatizing attitudes of psychologists is critical for both improving the quality of mental health services and supporting the reintegration of individuals into society.
