The investigation of self-handicapping perceptions of psychological counselor candidates in terms of their level of authenticity and the supervision they received

This research examines self-handicapping perceptions of psychological counselors in terms of their level of authenticity and supervision they received. Within this context, it is examined whether self-handicapping perceptions of psychological counselor candidates differentiate or not according to their gender, decisiveness about working in field, history of receiving psychological help or not, and the type, style and quality of supervision they received. In addition, it is investigated if self-handicapping perceptions of psychological counselor candidates are predicted by authenticity, working as psychological counselors and the quality of supervision they received. The sample of this research consists of 298 senior class psychological counseling candidates from Anadolu University, Çukurova University, Gazi University, İnönü University, Mersin University, Ondokuz Mayıs University and Osmangazi University. The measurement tools used to obtain research data are "Self-Handicapping Scale", "Authenticity Scale" and "Personal Information form". The data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, one- way and two- way analysis of variance and stepwise regression analysis. The findings showed that while self-handicapping perceptions of psychological counselor candidates differentiate according to their level of authenticity, it doesn't differentiate at a significant level in terms of their history of receiving psychological help or not, decisiveness about working in field and the type and style of supervision they received. Result of regression analysis showed that self-handicapping perceptions of psychological counselor candidates is predicted at a significant level by authenticity, the quality of supervision and decisiveness about working in field. According to the regression analysis results, the total variance was explained by %19 authenticity, %2 quality of supervision, and %1 decisiveness about working as a psychological counselor in field.
