Serum levels of TIMP-1, TIMP-2, MMP-2, MMP-9 and TGF-B in psoriasis patients and their relationship with disease activity

Abstract (EN)

Objective: The aim of our study was to determine serum TIMP-1, TIMP-2, MMP-2, MMP-9 and TGF-ß in patients with psoriasis and to understand their possible roles in the disease activity.Materials and Methods: Sixty-two patients, who applied to Dermatology Outpatient Clinic of Celal Bayar University Hospital and diagnosed as psoriasis clinically and histopathologically were included in our study. Serum TIMP-1, TIMP-2, MMP-2, MMP-9 and TGF-ß1 levels were studied in peripheral venous blood samples with ELISA method in the laboratory of Biochemistry Department of Celal Bayar University. Statistical analyses were made by the 17.0 version of SPSS.Results: Twenty-nine (46,8 %) of the sixty-two psoriasis patients were female and thirty-three (53,2 %) were male. Ages varied from 10 to 72 and the mean value was 43,51±15,04. There was no significant relationship between values and sex, family history or psoriatic arthritis. TIMP-1 was related with disease duration. There was no significant relationship between TIMP-1, TIMP-2, MMP-2, MMP-9, TGF-ß and PASI. MMP-9 with TGF- ß and MMP-2 with TIMP-2 was positively correlated.Conclusions and Suggestions: According to our findings there is no relationship between matrix metalloproteinases and disease activity. Further studies with larger patient groups, including all parameters on the subject are necessary to clarifiy the roles of MMPs in the psoriasis pathogenesis.
