Ptt Mekteb-i Âlisi: 1910-1934

Telegraph which was invented in second half of the 19.century has opened new era at communication system by spreading across the world in a short span of time. The communication which was previously provided by only letter has begun to be provided by telegraph using electrical current. The first telegraph lines were installed during Crimean War (1853-1856) by allied powers at Ottoman Empire. Because of the establishment of new telegraph lines and opening of new offices that caused increasing in communication, it was required to train employee to send new offices for Ottoman Post and Telegraph Organization. PTT Mekteb-I Âli which was opened in 1910 and continued training facilities until 1934 satisfied the need of administrative and technical personnel of Ottoman Post and Telegraph Organization. It is possible to evaluate PTT Mekteb-I Âli as vocational high school in today?s context. Also, Darüssafaka graduates made great contribution to opening and administration of this school. PTT Mekteb-I Âli embodied in itself important persons who made great works in the area of politics, literature, painting, mathematics and astronomy. At this thesis, PTT Mekteb-I Âli?s training activities, teaching staff and graduate students was examined. For this purpose, Mekteb-I Âli?s Records, Posta ve Telgraf Mektebine Mahsûs Talimâtnâme and students personal files available at Turkish Post and various resources was investigated.
