Evaluation of the described Ottoman postage stamps in the PTT Stamp Museum within framework of art history

Stamp is a kind of tag, one side is sticky and there is a picture or a text written on the other side. It shows posting fee was paid before. It was used in UK for the first time on 6th May 1840. The first postal stamp's name is "Penny Black" on which young Queen Victoria's picture was pressed on 1st May 1840. In Türkiye during Ottoman Period on the 1st January 1863 the first Ottoman stamps (the first emission stamps which are inscribed with the imperial signature) are made ready to be used. These stamps which were the first Turkish stamps was pressed at royal mint of which its special ottoman name was "Darphane-i Amire". These stamps were pressed by a stone press technique which is called lithography and they were painted and coated with glue by hand. In addition to this there are three different emissions of these stamps. Except for transmission and communication stamp is an elegant way of pricing postal fee and actually they are art objects reflecting societies' culture, traditions, political structure and their variation through history. As a matter of fact there are people collecting stamps, related envelopes and similar objects in the World. This is called as stamp collecting. Stamp collectors are called as philatelists. It is definite that the smallest objects and the most effective materials are stamps. This reality shows us in the course of time the worldwide stamps are unique art works. Besides these stamps are designed considering aesthetic care. Explaining stamp images by portroyals in terms of art history haven't been done before. This study should be evaluated considering there is limited competence area. In this study's content Ottoman Period depicted postal stamps located in PTT Stamp Museum are searched explaining adornment components on them. Also these explanations will be interpreted by art historian's point of view and art history depiction method. In addition to these involved stamps' history, terminology, press method, designer etc. will be mentioned in the study.
