Assessment of hormonal changes in individuals with different pubertal growth spurt stages

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between pubertal growth spurt stages determined by hand-wrist radiographs or the maturation phases of cervical vertebrae determined by lateral cephalometric radiographs and serum levels of GH, IGF-1, IGFBP-3 hormones Material and Method: This study comprised a total of 90 healthy individuals, 45 girls and 45 boys, aged between 9-16 years. Hand-wrist and lateral cephalometric radiographs and blood samples were taken from each individual in same day. Serum levels of GH, IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were measured using routine biochemical methods. Pubertal growth spurt stages were determined using the Grave-Brown method on hand-wrist radiographs and the Hassel-Farman method on lateral cephalometric radiographs. Statistical analyses of the data were performed using Spearman Rank correlation analysis, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, ANOVA, Kruskall-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U tests by using SPSS 20.0 version. Results: Serum levels of GH, IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 did not significantly differ between the genders.
