Product design in interior architecture education with Pugh/Decision Matrix method: Example of aku chair design

It is known that many famous architects and designers have important and well-known chair designs under the guidance of the history of the interior architecture profession and education. Chair designs, which have varied and taken their place in almost all architectural periods over the centuries, have been made a symbol of some trends and ideologies by famous designers. Thus, the chair element, which establishes a direct relationship within the scope of product design in the history of interior architecture profession and education, as the design product of this study, Afyon Kocatepe University Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design is selected and designed by 3rd grade students within the scope of Ecological Design Course. Design teams, which come together to design any product and consist of a small number, also need to be able to an effective method for produce the product they have determined in a minimal budget and limited time frame. In this thesis study, in which the Pugh/Decision Matrix method, which was selected as a product development model and proposed as a result of the study, is used, it is aimed to produce the best chair product. In this context, the main categories of "Function/Functionality, Form/Form, Geometric Layout, Composition, Application/Construction" are determined by the Pugh/Decision Matrix method by a 6-person design team that is a professional in its field. The subcategories of these main categories are determined by synthesizing them in the light of Gestalt Principles, Basic Design Principles and Design features. Accordingly, there are 18 criteria that have a dynamic structure in the design process. After the relationship of each binary criterion with each other and its raw/relative weight are determined by the design team, a reference image is selected for each criterion. Since the individuals who make up the design team are the most dominant people in the design process, they are also in the role of a jury, and two chair designs are evaluated by a jury. As a result of this study, the successful completion of two chair designs takes place within three cycles (evaluation-elimination-update). Pugh used for the first time in product design in the field of interior architecture/interior design teams with limited time and budget by the decision matrix method in the field of architecture, engineering and other social sciences in the field of effective solutions in the fields of product designs that can take place that will be achieved using estimated.
