Abstract (EN)

In the present study, it was designed to evaluate the possible biological effects of whole- body 1800 MHz GSM-like RFR exposure on liver oxidative DNA damage and lipid peroxidation levels in nonpregnant, pregnant New Zealand White rabbits and in their newly borns. Eighteen each 13-month-old nonpregnant and eighteen each 13-month-old pregnant New Zealand White rabbits were assigned and randomly divided into four groups which are composed of 9 rabbits: i. Group I (nonpregnant- control), ii. Group II (nonpregnant-RF exposed), iii. Group III (pregnant-control), iv. Group IV (pregnant-RF exposed). Newborns of the pregnant rabbits were also divided into two groups: v. Group V (newborns of Group III) and vi. Group VI (newborns of Group III). 1800 MHz GSM-like RF radiation whole- body exposure (15 min/day for a week) was applied to Group II and Group IVLiver 8OHdG/dG amounts were measured by using the HPLC method of Andican et al.(2004). MDA levels were determined by using Uchiyama and Mihara?s (1978) spectrophotometric method. No significant difference was found in liver 8OHdG amount of exposure groups (Group II and Group IV) compared to controls (Group I and Group III).However, in Group II and Group IV TBARS levels were found increased (p<0.05) with respect to Group I. There was no difference in liver tissue 8OHdG levels between newborns of pregnant- RFR exposed (Group VI) and newborns of pregnant-controls (Group V). Similarly, no significant difference was found in the MDA levels of Group VI and Group V. The weight of the animals were also measured after the last exposure day. There were slight decreases between pregnant-exposed and pregnant-controls with respect to nonpregnant- controls, but the differences were not found statistically significant (p > 0.05Consequently, the whole- body 1800 MHz GSM-like RF/MW exposure may lead to oxidative destruction in lipids being indicators of subsequent reactions that occur to form other oxygen toxicity in tissuesTo our knowledge, any research on mobile phone like radiation on oxidative DNA and lipid damage in liver tissue of pregnant animals and their offsprings has not published, yet. With this perspective, our results may constitute a reference for the future pregnancy studies. Moreover, it would be beneficiary to increase number of these studies for establishing international standards for the protection of pregnant women under RFR exposure.
