Comparison of the anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects of intrathecal and oral eugenol on spinal cord injury in a rat trauma model

Abstract (EN)

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: In this study, we want to investigate the difference between the oral and intrathecal pathways to secondary damage to the spinal cord after EUD spinal cord injury, which has previously shown anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. Rats were randomly divided into four groups (N:8). MATERIALS AND METHODS: They were randomly divided into 4 groups, each containing 8 subjects. On the 1st day, after clinical evaluation of the subjects using the Drummond-Moore criteria and inclined plane test, the subjects were anesthetized by i.p (intraperitoneal) route with a combination of 10mg/kg xylazine + 90 mg/kg ketamine. Group 1 only laminectomy was performed. Cord compression was performed after group 2 laminectomy. After group 3 laminectomy, cord compression was performed and daily oral eugenol therapy was given. After group 4 laminectomy, cord compression and intrathecal eugenol treatment were given. . Until the 21st day, the respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and body temperature of the subjects were constantly monitored.21. After the clinical evaluation with the same method, the subjects were anesthetized the next day. Spinal cord removal and sacrification process has been completed. Histopathological and biochemical samples taken from the subjects were delivered to the relevant departments. RESULTS : Oral and intrathecal eugenol showed anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects both clinically and histopathologically after spinal cord injury. No significant biochemical difference was observed. CONCLUSION : Intrathecal eugenol can be used as a supportive treatment or as a separate modality with oral eugenol, which has been shown to be effective after spinal cord injury. However, since this result is the first study on this subject, it should be supported by additional studies. Keywords: Eugenol, Neuroprotection, Spinal cord Injury
