The effects of prophylactic calcium dobesilate in experimetal renal ischemia reperfusion injury

In this study, we investigated the effects of prophylactic calcium dobesilate (Ca-D) in experimental right renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) in rats histologically and biochemically.Male 24 Wistar-Albino rats were divided into three groups each has eight rats; sham group (group 1), I/R group (group 2) and I/R+ Ca-D group (group 3). 100 mg/kg Ca-D was given to rats in group 3 through gastric gavage for ten days before ischemia and reperfusion process. Thirty minutes of renal ischemia and 24 hours reperfusion were measured in all groups except sham group. The levels of urea and creatinin were exemined in plasma. The enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were examined in the erythrocytes. Histopathological changes were also studied in the kidney tissue.The median levels of SOD and GPx in the I/R group were found higher than the levels in the sham and I/R+ Ca-D group but it wasn?t statistically significant. The levels of creatinin in the I/R+ Ca-D group were significantly lower than the levels in the I/R and sham group (p<0.05). The median levels of urea in the I/R+ Ca-D group were lower than the levels in the I/R and sham groups but it wasn?t statistically significant. Histopathological examinations showed that the histopathologic changes in the kidney injury (tubuler epithelial cell flattening, chronic inflammation, cytoplasmic vacuolization, cell necrosis and tubular lumen obstruction ) in the I/R group were significantly higher than the control group (p<0.05). The histopathologic changes except cell necrosis in the I/R+ Ca-D group were significantly lower than in the IR group (p<0.05).The results of this study indicate that prophylactic calcium dobesilate has protective effects on kidney injury caused by renal ischemia-reperfusion.Keywords: Calcium dobesilate, prophylactic, renal ischemia-reperfusion
