Comparison of treatment choices in rats formed spinal infection related to implant

COMPARİSON OF TREATMENT CHOİCES IN RATS FORMEDSPINAL INFECTION RELATED TO IMPLANTOrhan KALEMCI M.D., Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of MedicineDokuz Eylul University, Department of Neurosurgery 35330 Inciralti / IZMIRPURPOSE: After constitution spinal implant infection in rats we want to compareantibiotic, irrigation and removal of implant ıf are effective for the treatment .MATERİALS AND METHODS: Fourty albino Wistar rats were divided in five groupsafter lumbar 5 laminectomy, place titanium piece and then inoculation 108 CFU / 1 ccmethicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). First eight rats are accepted forprestudy group as came by infection. Other four groups get teatment as antibiotherapy,irrigation and antibiotherapy, implant removed and antibiotherapy, and the last groupconsist as control group with no treatment. After a week all the animals sacrified and themicrobiological study performed.RESULTS: All the tissue examples studied by calculation number of bacteria as CFU /gr. Results are compared by Kruskal-Wallis variance analysis and Mann-Whitney-test.When we compare the treatments with the control group we found that all the treatmentswere effective.CONCLUSION: When the treatment results are compared with the control group wefound that statistically most significant treatment is reoperation to remove the implant(p=0.02). But in comparion of treatments we found no difference inbetween.KEY WORDS: Implant, Infection, Laminectomy, Treatment
