The effect of selenium and methyl jasmonate pre-harvest treatments on fruit quality characteristics during cold storage in red globe grape cultivar

In this study, the influence of methyl jasmonate (MeJA, 8.0 mM L-1) and selenium (Se, 1.0 mM L-1) pre-harvest treatments were investigated on fruit quality characteristics during cold storage in the "Red Globe" table grape. Se was sprayed to foliar in 3, 5 and 7 weeks after fruit set. MeJA was applied to foliar and bunches on 25 and 15 days before harvest. In the control treatment, only pure water was applied to the vines. Harvested grapes were stored under cold conditions for 4 months at 1°C and 85±5% relative humidity. During the storage period, weight loss in clusters increased and berry firmness decreased in all applications. MeJA and Se treatments did not affect total loss in bunch. At the end of storage, cluster weight loss was the least in control (8.90%), decay rate (23.40%) and berry firmness (60.28 N) were determined in Se. The highest increase in soluble solids content (SSC) and the highest berry decay rate in storage were determined in grapes treated with MeJA. During the storage period, the total monomeric anthocyanin (TMA) content increased in all applications, and MeJA and Se applications affected the TMA content positively. While pre-harvest Se application increased the total phenol content, the total phenolic (TP) amount increased in control and MeJA applications during the storage period. The lowest total decay (5.6%) and total acidity (4.41%) were detected in selenium application when compared between harvest and day 120. Color characteristics decreased linearly during the storage period in all treatments. As a result, it has been revealed that foliar Se application before harvest can be used as a tool to maintain the quality of table grapes during harvest and cold storage.
