Abstract (EN)

Aim: To observe the effectiveness of breast milk and breastfeeding education given to mothers with newborn infants, to investigate the feeding habits of mothers, to emphasize the importance of breast milk, and to change the baby feeding attitude observed in mothers in favor of breast milk and extend breastfeeding periods. In addition, mothers who have difficulty in being in the hospital before they can connect with their baby by positively influencing them by contributing to breastfeeding rather than formula. Material and Methods: Demographic information of the mother before the 'Importance of Breastfeeding and Breastfeeding' training given to the mothers who stayed in İnönü University Faculty of Medicine Turgut Özal Medical Center Accompanying Mother and Education Unit between May-July 2019 and whose infants were hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit, A 11-question questionnaire including the information of the baby of the pregnancy and the postnatal period was applied. IOWA Newborn and Infant Infant Nutrition Attitude Scale (I-YSSCT), which consisted of 17 questions, was applied. I-YSÇBÖÖ consists of 17 questions, 9 of which are scored in reverse, each of which is strongly agree () agree () undecided () disagree () strongly disagree (). After the training, the mothers were re-administered I-YSSBTS. According to the power analysis conducted in our study, it was planned to include at least 48 mothers. At the end of the study, the direction of the feeding attitude of each mother and the changes in education and nutrition knowledge and attitudes were evaluated. When evaluating the findings obtained in this study, IBM SPSS Statistics 22 for statistical analysis (SPSS IBM, Turkey) programs were used. When evaluating the study data, the suitability of the parameters to normal distribution was evaluated by Shapiro Wilks test. When evaluating the study data, oneway Anova test and Tukey HDS test and Tamhane's T2 test were used for the comparison of the groups with normal distribution in comparison of the quantitative data as well as descriptive statistical methods (Mean, Standard deviation, frequency). Student t test was used to compare the normal distribution of parameters between the two groups. Paired Sample t test was used for intra-group comparisons of quantitative data showing normal distribution. In the qualitative data, McNemar test was used to compare pre- and post-training rates. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was calculated for reliability of the scale. Significance was evaluated at p <0.05 Results: A total of 51 mothers participated in the study. As one mother was <18 years old, two mothers could not complete their education due to their baby's health problems and were excluded from the study. We completed our study with 48 mothers. Two mothers had twins and one mother had triplets. The ages of the mothers ranged from 18 to 40 years with a mean of 27.77 ± 5.8 years. 12 (25%) of the mothers lived in the village, 7 (14.6%) lived in the district and 29 (60.4%) lived in the city center. While 4 (8.3%) of the mothers were illiterate, 26 (54.2%) were secondary, 9 (18.8%) were high school and 9 (18.8%) were university graduates. While 39 (81.3%) of the mothers were housewives, 9 (18.8%) were from other professions. The mean score of I-CISS before the training was 66.35 ± 5.11, and the mean score after the training was 74.5 ± 5.55. While only 15 (31.3%) of these were in the breastfeeding group before breast milk and breastfeeding training, 33 mothers (68.8%) were not found to be unstable and prone to feeding. After breast milk and breastfeeding training, 40 mothers (83.3%) were prone to breastfeeding group, 8 mothers (16.7%) were unstable, and no prone to food. It was observed that there was a significant difference in the mean score before and after the training and the education had a positive effect on the mothers' feeding attitudes. Conclusion: While the importance of breast milk in infant nutrition is an indisputable fact all over the world, the first step can be taken only by breastfeeding for healthy individuals. Increasing the breastfeeding rates can be achieved by raising the awareness of the importance of breast milk in the community. Especially with the trainings to be given to mothers, their attitudes to feeding their babies with breast milk can be increased and disseminated. In our study, when we compare before and after breast milk education, it was observed that education significantly affected the attitude of feeding mothers with breast milk.
