Comparison of Refik Halid Karay's Yatık Emine and Nathaniel Hawthourne's the Scarlett Letter novel in terms of Feminist Literary Theory and criticism

Refik Halid Karay (1888-1965), one of the versatile writers of Turkish literature, wrote Homeland Stories when he was exiled to Anatolia. In his work, which also reveals the socio-cultural structure of the period, Yatik Emine (1919) drew attention with the reality and detailed observation power in his depictions. His work The Scarlet Letter 1850 (Kızıl Damga), which he tells about the aspects and also reveals the strict life of the Puritans, has taken its place among the best-selling works in America. The aim of this study is to compare Refik Halid Karay's "Yatık Emine" story from Turkish literature and Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Kızıl Damga" in the context of feminist literary theory and criticism. In the study, besides the historical development of feminist literary theory and criticism, the lives, literary identities and works of Refik Halid Karay and Nathaniel Hawthorne are also included. The focus of the thesis is on gender, virginity, humiliation, deception, patriarchy, etc., which feminist literary theory and criticism also deals with. examines the basic concepts. In this context, the female characters in the works named "Yatık Emine and The Scarlet Letter" were examined by comparing them on the basis of selected basic concepts.
