Abstract (EN)
In this study, the stories of Refik Halit Karay were evaluated with the concept of chronotope which is one of the theoretical approaches developed by the Russian literary critic Mikhail Bahtin. In the novel as a narrative form, the concept of chronotope, which was developed to examine the design of space and time, seemed appropriate for the stories of Karay, who produced by shaping spatial and temporal indicators. Therefore, it is one of the aims of this research to show that the concept of chronotope is also a suitable method for examining the genre of stories. İnasmuch as there is an important accumulation of time and space in Karay's stories and they have a quality that can be read with a chronotopic approach. Adopting Maupassant storytelling, the first striking feature of Karay's stories is that the locations of these stories are mostly chosen from Anatolian geography. The Turkish story has been taken to Anatolia by these texts and they allowed us to know about Anatolia. At the same time, in the author's other stories, it has been seen that Arab countries such as Palestine, Lebanon and Yemen are discussed, apart from the Anatolian geography. And these countries have increased the geographical diversity in the author's stories. This study aims to contribute to the use of the concept of chronotope in the field of literature and to the social and cultural understanding of Karay's stories. The use of chronotopes, which can reflect the cultural phenomena of the period described in Karay's stories and define their characters in the context of their position in social life, has been researched. Reflections on time and space in the author's stories are extremely important in terms of determining the social life of the period and indirectly establishing a critical point of view. The functions of the mentioned chronotopes emerged as a technical possibility with the determination of the provincial, road-encounter, castle, parlour-halls and threshold chronotopes in Karay's stories, and new findings were delivered in the author's stories with a different reading method. The meaning of traditional time in the stories by combining with a certain place has also been examined. In the review, first of all, chronotope theory, which forms the basis of the study, is discussed within the framework drawn by Bakhtin for the explanation of its meaning and functions in literary texts. After that, Karay's stories were examined, and the time/space value of these places in terms of the story was tried to be determined with the selections made from the places he used in his stories.
