Abstract (EN)

Throughout history of Islam and the West the periods of conflict and cooperation are not exceptional. Today a clash of civilisations is in the agenda more than ever since 9/11 but the respective political actors of this so-to-speak clash, namely Islam and the West, do not depict homogeneous features and they deserve to be carefully examined both in terms of their historical background as well as their current positions. This paper aims to bring forward insights from islamist movements, Europe and United States which will help the reader question the rhetoric of ?clash?. While doing this, it sheds light to the Western perception of Islam, a religion seen as ready to challenge western democracies and which is taken by them in many instances, to be the new threat for the world political system of the third millenium.
