The results of identification and guidance done by counseling and research centers in terms of students with a diagnosis of intelligencelevel; Fatsa sample

The purpose of this research is to deliniate whether the students, who had been directed to RAM (Guidance Research Centre) with the suspicion of mental incompetence and not benefiting from the supportive special education services because of having an intelligence rate in the range of 70-90, showing progress in academic skills, and also to deliniate whether their progress in the fields of Turkish and mathematics parallels with their classmates.The research group consists of 6 second-year students, who had been in the region of Fatsa RAM and directed Fatsa RAM and diagnosed here in the academic year 2009-2010 due to suspicion of insufficiency and since their intelligence quotient is in the range of 70-90 according to this diagnosis and therefore diagnosed as having normal intelligence, and 79 students in the same classes of these 6 students.In order to collect the data for the study, the criterion referenced tests have been prepared. These tests have been applied twice on the students with the range of 70-90 intelligence quotient and the other 79 students in their classes just after the diagnosis process at RAM and two months later.As a result of the study, the average of correct responses of the six students being assessed by RAM in the assessment test in the field of Turkish in November was 19, while the average number of correct responses of their of peers in the assessment test in the field of Turkish in November was 69.In November, the average number of correct responses of the six students in the prepared statements contained in mathematics measurement tool was 3, while the average number of correct responses of their peers, in the prepared statements contained in mathematics measurement tool was 26 in November.Two months after the application, in January, the average number of correct responses of the six students in the prepared statements contained in Turkish measurement tool was 22, while the average number of correct responses of their peers, in the prepared statements contained in Turkish measurement tool was 70 in January.In January, the average number of correct responses of the six students in the prepared statements contained in mathematics measurement tool was 7, while the average number of correct responses of their peers, in the prepared statements contained in mathematics measurement tool was 49 in January.The performance levels of the 6 students in the fields of Turkish and mathematics in measurement tools applied immediately after diagnosis by RAM had been significantly different than the levels of performance of their peers and while there was no acceptable progress by the 6 students diagnosed by RAM and have an intelligence quotient in the range of 70-90 within the last two months over time, the other students in their classes progressed within 2 months.Taken the research findings as a whole, it has been concluded that during the diagnostic process for mental impairment by RAM, it is not acted in accordance with the regulations of special education services and educational decisions were given in academic skills without taking the capabilities of the students into consideration.
