Study of the relationship between the negative future expectations and personality characteristics of guidance and psychological counseling students: The case of Biruni University

This research aims to study the relationship between the negative future expectations and personality characteristics of Guidance and Psychological Counseling students. It also aims to study whether there was a differentiation between the levels of hopelessness and personality characteristics according to the variables of gender, age, grade level, parental attitudes and other variables. The research was designed in a correlational survey model. The assessment tools; Personal Information Form, Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Adjective-Based Personality Test were applied to 181 1st,2nd,3rd, and 4th grade students, 150 of whom were females and 31 of whom were males, studying at the Biruni University Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling. SPSS 26.0 was used for the analysis of the data. Kruskal Wallis H, Mann Whitney U and Spearman's Rho Correlation tests were used because the data ranged nonnormal distribution during statistical analysis. The extraversion sub-dimension scores of the Adjective-Based Personality Test differ significantly in terms of the maternal child-rearing attitude variable. Openness to experience sub-dimension scores differ significantly in terms of the variables of maternal educational status, expectations regarding the professional field in 5-10 years and employment after graduation. Responsibility sub-dimension scores differ significantly in terms of the variables of the paternal educational status, expectations regarding the professional field in 5-10 years and employment after graduation. Emotional imbalance/neuroticism sub-dimension scores differ significantly in terms of expectations regarding the employment after graduation variable. The agreeableness sub-dimension scores differ significantly in terms of the paternal educational status variable. As a result of the research, it was found that while there was relationship between the hopelessness levels and some sub-dimensions of personality characteristics of the Guidance and Psychological Counseling students, there was no relationship between some other sub-dimensions. The data obtained in the study were interpreted in the light of the literature and suggestions were made.
