Abstract (EN)

At the beginning of the 20th century, the tendency of artists to move away from nature and create works that exclude natural subjects has resulted in numerous artists experimenting with abstraction. This attitude caused artists to abandon the traditional modes of painting and to come up with unique, creative and different styles. Under the influence of the large-scale transformations that took place in the USA following the second World War, Abstract Expressionism emerged, which introduced concepts such as pure abstract, geometric depiction and reduction, that gave art and artists more freedom. Though abstract art and abstraction were heavily criticized at first, they gained the acceptance of viewers and critics over time and became widespread. Especially the influence of modernism can be seen in contemporary painting in the form of new quests and different approaches. The fact that the transformed derivatives of the geometric forms of the past reappear today indicates that artists make use of new models of creation. With the possibilities offered by today's technology, the Internet and computer software, artworks have gained a distinct structure with regard to their design. The diversification, analysis, reduction of a pictorial composition and the separation of it to its layers play a significant role in geometric abstraction and the perception of space. This study focuses on the historical development of geometric abstraction which emerged under the influence of modernism. It analyzes its conceptual definitions and insights; examining paintings from artists who possess formal similarities. As the pursuit of geometric abstraction continues with the help of technological developments, it keeps on transforming the perceptual aspect of the relationship between painting and space through new pursuits and concepts.
