The place of the recital concept in Turkish music culture and the example of baglama performance

This study aims to identify the significance, scope, and application of the concept of "recital" within Turkish music culture. The research includes the analysis and performance of selected works from a repertoire determined through interviews conducted with six academic experts in the field, and employs document analysis as a qualitative research method. The data pool of the study consists of information obtained through semi-structured interviews conducted with expert academicians, using open-ended questions. The theoretical framework of the study is grounded in performance theory and the concept of recital, evaluated within the discipline of ethnomusicology, as well as historical and technical information concerning the baglama, one of the principal instruments of Turkish folk music. In addition, general information about the works included in the recital repertoire to be performed with the baglama, analyses of the pieces, and their characteristic features are also addressed. The concept of recital denotes a significant performance in which individual expression is emphasized across all musical genres, requiring intense preparation, and where the performer showcases their musical knowledge, interpretive abilities, and advanced performance techniques. Determining how this concept is reflected and applied within Turkish music culture according to certain standards is considered highly important for performers who wish to present such performances in this context.
