Abstract (EN)

DETERMINING THE PLASMA LEVEL OFMETALLOPROTEINASES-2-8-9, METALLOPROTEINASESINHIBITOR-2, AND ENDOTHELIN-1 IN NEWBORN INFANTSWITH RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROMEVIII. SUMMARYMatrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have many structural similarities. Theycan also degrade different kinds of matrix proteins. MMPs are inhibited byspecific tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). Uncontrolled destructionof tissue by MMPs can cause the pathologic process to begin. Endothelin (ET) isthe member of new regulatory peptide family. They increase permeability instrong vascular structures. They also take part in the activation of inflammationcells. Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is the leading cause of death inpreterm infants. This syndrome is caused by developmental lack of surfactant.This study observed the levels of MMP-2, MMP-8, MMP-9, TIMP-1, andendothelin-1 in the plasma of both healthy preterm infants and preterm infantswith RDS.This study took 21 infants with RDS and 24 healthy premature infants. Infirst 48 hours, 2cc of blood was taken from the infants. The Enzyme-LinkedImmuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA) technique was used.This study found that female infants with RDS had a higher level of MMP-2when compared to male infants, despite the fact that RDS is generally morecommon in male infants.A higher level of TIMP-2 was found in female infants with RDS andmothers with EMR. Infants with RDS have higher levels of ET-1.RDS is an inflamatory process. But, the results of this study could not becorroborated by other studies. Every study had different results.The differences in the results can be explained by the plasma used in thestudy and that the gestational ages of the patients are older (32-33 weeks) thanother studies. A more detailed study should be conducted, focusing on therelationship between Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and plasma.
