An application of Rhetorical Structure Theory in expository text

The fundamental aim of this study is to prove that RYK (Rhetorical Structure Theory/RYK) has a managing function on case variables which provide the organization in preparing/plan and development level of peculiar texts to educational text design. In the direction of this aim, because it signifies the regulations which affect text organization and as it has also been a model which has been recently used on the basis of text linguistics, Mann and Thompson?s RYK principle formed the theoretical inspiration of the study. Therefore, in the study, the lists for subject?s worth/thematic differences and similarities faced in the preparing processes of texts, which are the subjects to the educational design, have been made out and it was attempted to determine the effect and contribution of RYK principles and rules in the process. In the frame of these aims, the answers of following questions have been searched:1.Do the RYK?s constituents have any potential role on the determination global level processors in a text? If there is, what is direction of this effect?2.A reader acquires the information in an explicative text by means of some determinants such as the thematic content and the thematic continuation. Are there any probable contribution of RYK?s tools/constituents to the reading and comprehension of the reader with the minimum effort? If there is, how is the hierarchical configuration of this contribution realized?3.How often and what kind of information or tendency are offered in the explicative texts, which are typical of the educational design?4.What are the constraints that determine the data within the scope or out of the scope of these texts?With the aim of achieving the answers of these questions, RYK?s operation directives which offer the most important and beginning premise as `the text does not form echeloned clauses, it is correlative nature of premise which places in the focus of sequential clauses? have been checked and made a causality analysis related to these directives. The precondition of search of structural classification as coherence in texts, beginning, advance and consequence according to rhetorical functions in the entire of text; are based on the advance search notifications as structural assignation in physical texts can be only assessed by the way of searching of relations of all parts with one another.In this study, The R structure (the lexical diagram) has been analyzed as the subject considering about the answers on how clearly the text writers can encode structural coherence texts which they have already produced for the educational design. The dependence inside texts was investigated in terms of referents and restrictions in the texts, the conjunctions, words, suffixes that indicate time, aspect and mood and it was assumed that there was a correlation among the functions of structural segments.Data base of this research is constituted from explicative texts which are subject to educational design. Namely, the fundemental aim of the study was verified via the analysis of findings from the point of rhetoric structure configuration of explicative texts.Key Words: Text, information processing, mental representations, rhetorical structure theory.
