The effects of music listening on retrograde intrarenal surgery patients in terms of anxiety, pain and the amount of analys use

This study investigated the impacts of music listening in patients undergoing retrograd intrarenal surgery on basic vital signs, anxiety, pain and amount of analgesics used in the preoperatif and postoperatif period. The randomized controlled study included a total of 58 patients (35 male, 23 female; mean age 47,38±15,88 years; distribution 18-78 years), who had undergone RIRS in the Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University Hospital Urology Clinic between May 14th-December 31st, 2019. The patients were separated into two groups: 30 patients in the music group (18 male, 12 female; mean age 47,73±16,80 years; distribution 18-78 years) and 28 patients in the control group (17 male, 11 female; mean age 47,00±15,14 years; distribution 18-78 years). The preoperatif and postoperatif data were collected via the "Patient Introduction Form" and "Patient Follow-up Form". The patients' pain and anxiety levels were evaluated using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain and VAS anxiety, respectively. Examining the patients' anxiety scores in two different periods; the control group patients had higher anxiety scores in the preoperatif and postoperatif period and there was a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control group (p=0,000, p=0,024 respectively). Also, the control group had higher pain levels in the postoperatif period, compared to the experimental group (p=0,017). Our study results demonstrate that music listening in patients undergoing retrograd intrarenal surgery, reduces basic vital signs, anxiety and pain levels in the preoperatif and postoperatif period. Thus, we suggest that music intervention be used in patients undergoing retrograd intrarenal surgery.
