Abstract (EN)
The phenomenon of "serial callers'' in Ghanaian talk radio, particularly in ASEMPA FM's Ekosiisen program, is explored in this research with a focus on its potential impact on participatory democracy in Ghana. Tracing its origins from the constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech and press freedom in 1992, the study highlights how the proliferation of media outlets has provided more avenues for public participation, notably through phone-in programs. However, this has also led to the emergence of serial callers who frequently contribute to discussions, often dominating airtime and influencing other callers.Through continent analysis, the research finds that serial callers tend to engage multiple times a week, occupying a significant portion of airtime with their views. While their participation adds diversity to debates, it is argued that their disproportionate influence may hinder the democratic ideal of equal participation. This conclusion suggests that despite the positive aspect of amplifying diverse voices, the dominance of serial callers could suppress the participation of others and undermine the democratic principle of equitable representation. In essence, while serial callers contribute to the pluralism of media discourse, their overwhelming presence may pose challenges to the democratic process by potentially marginalizing alternative viewpoints. Thus, the study underscores the need for measures to ensure a more balanced and inclusive platform for public engagement in Ghana's democratic system.
