Abstract (EN)

This thesis, titled "An Examination on Symphonic Poetry in the Romantic Period: The Liszt Mazeppa Example", examines the relationship between Mazeppa, the symphonic poem of F. Liszt, and the program, harmony and form. Structural and contextual analysis has been developed in the most appropriate way to analyze this relationship deeply and clearly. Historically, it was a thought that easily escaped to approach Liszt's symphonic poems in sonata form, or as a form that would be meaningful only when taken together with the added program. So both ideas have been carefully examined and analyzed in this analysis. The authenticity of the written programs and the history is discussed and an analysis of the program is included wherever possible and convenient. The understanding of Liszt's way of extracting the essence of a program, often resulting in a thesis, an antithesis, a synthesis model, has made it important to understand the great structural organization in symphonic poems. Before the deep analysis of each symphonic poem, a graph showing the relationship between the functions of the motifs, the divisions and the tone centers, and their relation to one another has been added. These graphs involve formal / interpretive techniques and an important part of the analysis of the involvement of time elements, which is specifically aimed at in the study of this thesis. The concept of "motif type" has been developed in conjunction with the examination of the sequence constructions (naturally the complexity of harmonic models) as a way of expressing programs in symphonic poems. The analysis of these poems is a difficult distinction in the detailed analysis of symphonic poems, since the analyzes cannot be placed easily on the sonata form and each poem has its own unique structure taken from the direct program. As a result, the program cannot be supported at a common point. Accordingly, we have concluded that the program of the composer has generally been expressed in terms of motif types and the appropriate harmony expressed in the sequences. That is, the program has been expressed in a different way by synthesizing the characteristics of more traditional and formal structures with the presenting poems of the individual as a whole.
